Non-evidence maximum (NEM)
Coverage available without medical underwriting.
The non-evidence maximum is the amount of life or disability coverage an insurer will issue without health questions. Coverage above it requires evidence of insurability.
The NEM is set by reference to group size and benefit formula, so it can rise as a group grows — which is worth revisiting at renewal.
What this means for a BC plan
Highly paid employees at smaller BC firms frequently have life or LTD coverage capped by the NEM well below the plan's stated formula. Check whether senior staff are actually covered at the level the booklet implies.
