Editorial Policy
How content on this site is researched, sourced, reviewed, published and kept current — and the standards we hold it to.

Who publishes this site
Content on groupbenefitsvancouver.com is produced by Ascent Insurance Services Inc., an independent insurance agency licensed and regulated by the Insurance Council of British Columbia. Group Benefits Vancouver is a marketing name used by that company for its group employee benefits practice. Full details are in our legal and licensing disclosures.
Why we have an editorial policy at all
We sell group benefits advice, and we also publish articles about group benefits. Those two facts create an obvious tension, and the honest response is to be explicit about how we manage it rather than to pretend it does not exist. This page describes the standards our content is held to, so you can judge it accordingly.
Risk classification
Insurance is a regulated, licensure-adjacent subject where the consequences of error are material. We classify all group benefits content at our highest routine standard, which carries specific obligations:
- A named, licensed reviewer must sign off before publication
- Every material claim must be cited to a primary or authoritative source
- Language is hedged where genuine uncertainty exists, and no article makes a personal recommendation for an individual reader's situation
- A full disclaimer appears on every article
- Content is reviewed at least every six months, and immediately when a relevant rule changes
Authorship and review
Every article carries a named author with a real biography page, a published date, and a last-updated date. Authors are named individuals at this firm, not a generic "team" byline.
Because group benefits is a regulated subject, articles additionally require review by a licensed advisor before they are published. Where an article displays "Reviewed by", that review genuinely occurred on the date shown. We do not display a review that did not happen. Articles awaiting review are visibly marked as drafts and are excluded from search engine indexing until the review is complete.
Sourcing standards
Every factual claim, statistic and quoted figure is either cited or removed. We do not publish unattributed numbers, and "studies show" without a named study does not survive review.
We prefer sources in this order:
- Primary — government and regulatory bodies, statutes and official standards, Canada Revenue Agency guidance, provincial health programs, and first-party data
- Authoritative secondary — recognized industry bodies, academic institutions, and established trade publications with named authorship
We do not cite competitor content, content farms, AI-generated aggregators, or press releases as evidence for a claim. Where a useful figure appears in a secondary source, we cite the original it came from. Every external link is verified before publication and re-verified at each scheduled review.
Original experience, and its limits
Where we describe what typically happens on a renewal, how carriers respond to a challenge, or which plan-design faults recur, we are drawing on our own advisory work with employer clients. Where we are not, we do not write in a voice implying that we are.
We do not publish client data, client names or plan specifics. Any aggregate figures drawn from our own book will be labelled as such, described with their methodology and sample size, and published only where they can be presented without identifying any client.
Commercial independence
We are independent and are not owned by, and have no exclusive distribution agreement with, any insurance carrier. No carrier pays for coverage on this site, reviews our content before publication, or has any influence over what we write. Where we name carriers, it is as illustration, not endorsement.
Our articles link to our own services, because that is what this site is for. We try to keep that separate from the analysis itself: if the honest answer to a question is that you do not need to change anything, that is what the article says.
Corrections
If we publish something inaccurate we correct it and note the correction on the page rather than quietly editing it. If you believe something here is wrong, write to admin@ascentinsurance.ca and we will look at it.
Updates and removal
Group benefits content is reviewed at least every six months and updated immediately when tax treatment, provincial programs or regulatory requirements change. The last-updated date on each article reflects a genuine review, not a re-publication to appear fresh. Articles that become inaccurate and cannot be brought current are removed rather than left up.
Use of AI
Drafting tools may be used in research and production. They do not replace the named author or the licensed reviewer, both of whom are accountable for what appears. No article is published on the strength of generated text alone, and every citation is checked by a person.
What this content is not
Nothing on this site is insurance, legal, tax or accounting advice for your situation, and reading it does not create an advisory relationship. Coverage is governed by the policy and booklet issued by the insurance carrier. Speak with a licensed advisor before making decisions about your plan.
